Output by industry is a gross measure of the total sales of each industry sector in Tasmania. It does not measure how productive each industry sector is at producing this output - which is measured by value added.
By comparing the output of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of Tasmania’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the output by industry sectors in Tasmania in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:
- Construction ($10,652 million or 15.0%)
- Health Care and Social Assistance ($8,395 million or 11.8%)
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing ($7,758 million or 10.9%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $26,804 million in total or 37.7% of the total output by total industry in the Tasmania.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Tasmania accounted for 15.0% in Construction; 11.8% in Health Care and Social Assistance and 10.9% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.
The major differences between output by industries of Tasmania and Tasmania were:
- A smaller percentage of output by Other Services (1.6% compared to 1.6%)
- A smaller percentage of output by Arts and Recreation Services (1.2% compared to 1.2%)
