Output by industry is a gross measure of the total sales of each industry sector in the Northern Tasmania Region. It does not measure how productive each industry sector is at producing this output - which is measured by value added.
By comparing the output of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of the Northern Tasmania Region’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the output by industry sectors in the Northern Tasmania Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:
- Construction ($2,670 million or 14.0%)
- Manufacturing ($2,479 million or 13.0%)
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing ($2,336 million or 12.3%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $7,484 million in total or 39.4% of the total output by total industry in the the Northern Tasmania Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Tasmania accounted for 15.0% in Construction; 9.6% in Manufacturing and 10.9% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.
The major differences between output by industries of the Northern Tasmania Region and Tasmania were:
- A larger percentage of output by Manufacturing (13.0% compared to 9.6%)
- A smaller percentage of output by Public Administration and Safety (4.0% compared to 6.9%)
- A larger percentage of output by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (9.1% compared to 6.8%)
- A smaller percentage of output by Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (2.7% compared to 4.4%)

The total industry output in the Northern Tasmania Region increased by $1,855 million between 2018/19 and 2023/24.
The largest changes in the output by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Northern Tasmania Region were for:
- Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$599 million)
- Health Care and Social Assistance (+$539 million)
- Construction (+$377 million)
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$318 million)
