Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Northern Tasmania Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($2,986 million or 29.3%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance ($905 million or 8.9%)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services ($902 million or 8.8%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $4,793 million in total or 47.0% of the total imports by industry in the the Northern Tasmania Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Tasmania accounted for 29.7% in Manufacturing; 8.2% in Health Care and Social Assistance and 8.1% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Services.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Northern Tasmania Region and Tasmania were:

  • A larger percentage of total imports by Mining (6.2% compared to 4.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (3.9% compared to 5.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Wholesale Trade (3.2% compared to 4.0%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (8.8% compared to 8.1%)

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Northern Tasmania Region were for:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$282 million)
  • Manufacturing (+$270 million)
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services (+$191 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$166 million)
