Employment (total) is the most accurate and up to date measure of the total number of people employed in the Northern Tasmania Region. The statistics are modelled by NIEIR to correct for the known undercount of jobs recorded in the Census. They estimate the total number of persons employed in an industry sector (full-time and part-time) in the Northern Tasmania Region regardless of where they live. They are updated annually.
By comparing the number of jobs in each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of the Northern Tasmania Region's economy. This can be done by directly comparing the area to its benchmark, or by using a location quotient to look at the relative size of industries.
Estimated total employment by industry should not be considered as a "Full-Time Equivalent" measure as different industries will have different ratios of part-time and full time employees. Full-time employment by industry statistics are also available.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the local workers in the Northern Tasmania Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:
- Health Care and Social Assistance (13,895 people or 18.1%)
- Retail Trade (7,200 people or 9.4%)
- Manufacturing (7,043 people or 9.2%)
In combination these three industries accounted for 28,138 people in total or 36.8% of the local workers.
In comparison, Tasmania employed 17.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance; 9.2% in Retail Trade and 7.0% in Manufacturing.
The major differences between the jobs held by local workers of the Northern Tasmania Region and Tasmania were:
- A smaller percentage of local workers employed in the field of Public Administration and Safety (4.8% compared to 7.3%)
- A larger percentage of local workers employed in the field of Manufacturing (9.2% compared to 7.0%)
- A smaller percentage of local workers employed in the field of Mining (1.1% compared to 2.3%)
- A smaller percentage of local workers employed in the field of Education and Training (8.3% compared to 9.6%)

The number of local workers in the Northern Tasmania Region increased by 8,530 between 2018/19 and 2023/24.
