In the Northern Tasmania Region, Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing had the largest total exports by industry, generating $1,696 million in 2023/24.

Exports by industry are sales of goods and services to non-resident households, businesses and other organisations, outside the Northern Tasmania Region boundaries. Exports (domestic) include all exports from the area to other parts of Australia. Exports (international) includes all exports from the Region to countries outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total exports by industry sectors in the Northern Tasmania Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (1,696 million or 22.5%)
  • Manufacturing (1,552 million or 20.6%)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (1,131 million or 15.0%)

In combination these three industries accounted for 4,379 million in total or 58.1% of the total exports by industry in the the Northern Tasmania Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in Tasmania accounted for 21.1% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing; 14.5% in Manufacturing and 15.1% in Health Care and Social Assistance.

The major differences between the total exports by industries of the Northern Tasmania Region and Tasmania were:

  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Public Administration and Safety (1.5% compared to 8.6%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Manufacturing (20.6% compared to 14.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of total exports by Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (0.7% compared to 4.4%)
  • A larger percentage of total exports by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (12.1% compared to 8.6%)

The total total exports by industry in the Northern Tasmania Region $increased by 18 million between 2018/19 and 2023/24.

The largest changes in the total exports by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Northern Tasmania Region were for:

  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$409 million)
  • Health Care and Social Assistance (+$332 million)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$243 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$66 million)
