Imports (domestic) includes all imports from other parts of Australia to the Region.Imports (international) includes the value of all imports to the area from outside Australia.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Northern Rivers Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:

  • Manufacturing ($5,374 million or 33.4%)
  • Financial and Insurance Services ($1,587 million or 9.8%)
  • Public Administration and Safety ($1,318 million or 8.2%)

In combination these three industries accounted for $8,279 million in total or 51.4% of the total imports by industry in the the Northern Rivers Region.

In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 33.5% in Manufacturing; 8.0% in Financial and Insurance Services and 6.2% in Public Administration and Safety.

The major differences between total imports by industries of the Northern Rivers Region and NSW were:

  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Mining (3.2% compared to 5.4%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Public Administration and Safety (8.2% compared to 6.2%)
  • A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (9.8% compared to 8.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of total imports by Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (1.9% compared to 3.2%)

The total total imports by industry in the Northern Rivers Region increased by $2,146 million between 2018/19 and 2023/24.

The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Northern Rivers Region were for:

  • Manufacturing (+$656 million)
  • Public Administration and Safety (+$363 million)
  • Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$321 million)
  • Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$170 million)
