Dominant groups
An analysis of the total imports by industry sectors in the Northern Rivers Region in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:
- Manufacturing ($5,374 million or 33.4%)
- Financial and Insurance Services ($1,587 million or 9.8%)
- Public Administration and Safety ($1,318 million or 8.2%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $8,279 million in total or 51.4% of the total imports by industry in the the Northern Rivers Region.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in NSW accounted for 33.5% in Manufacturing; 8.0% in Financial and Insurance Services and 6.2% in Public Administration and Safety.
The major differences between total imports by industries of the Northern Rivers Region and NSW were:
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Mining (3.2% compared to 5.4%)
- A larger percentage of total imports by Public Administration and Safety (8.2% compared to 6.2%)
- A larger percentage of total imports by Financial and Insurance Services (9.8% compared to 8.0%)
- A smaller percentage of total imports by Electricity, Gas, Water and Waste Services (1.9% compared to 3.2%)

The total total imports by industry in the Northern Rivers Region increased by $2,146 million between 2018/19 and 2023/24.
The largest changes in the total imports by industries between 2018/19 and 2023/24 in the Northern Rivers Region were for:
- Manufacturing (+$656 million)
- Public Administration and Safety (+$363 million)
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (+$321 million)
- Transport, Postal and Warehousing (+$170 million)
