Output by industry is a gross measure of the total sales of each industry sector in RDA Tropical North. It does not measure how productive each industry sector is at producing this output - which is measured by value added.
By comparing the output of each industry sector to a regional benchmark, you can clearly see the structure of RDA Tropical North’s economy. This can be done by directly comparing the percentage contribution of each industry to the total output, relative to the benchmark, or by using a location quotient, where a number greater than one indicates a high concentration of that industry and less than one indicates a lower concentration.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the output by industry sectors in RDA Tropical North in 2023/24 shows the three largest industries were:
- Construction ($4,274 million or 12.0%)
- Transport, Postal and Warehousing ($3,779 million or 10.6%)
- Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing ($3,552 million or 10.0%)
In combination these three industries accounted for $11,605 million in total or 32.7% of the total output by total industry in the RDA Tropical North.
In comparison, the same 3 industries in Queensland accounted for 14.1% in Construction; 6.9% in Transport, Postal and Warehousing and 3.5% in Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing.
The major differences between output by industries of RDA Tropical North and Queensland were:
- A smaller percentage of output by Mining (5.4% compared to 15.5%)
- A larger percentage of output by Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing (10.0% compared to 3.5%)
- A larger percentage of output by Transport, Postal and Warehousing (10.6% compared to 6.9%)
- A larger percentage of output by Accommodation and Food Services (5.6% compared to 2.7%)
